How to measure

Neck

Measure just below the Adam’s apple (mid-neck). Keep the tape level and relaxed.

Waist

Measure at the level of your belly button (navel) for men. Do not suck in your stomach.

Hips (women only)

Measure the widest part of your hips and glutes, with feet together.

Small measurement errors (1–2 cm) can significantly affect your body fat result.

What is body fat percentage?

Body fat percentage is the proportion of fat mass compared to your total body weight.

It is one of the most accurate indicators of health, aesthetics, and fitness level compared to weight alone.

Body fat percentage is more important than weight. Two people with the same weight can look completely different depending on their body composition.

US Navy Body Fat Formula

Men

495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077 × log10(waist - neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) - 450

Women

495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004 × log10(waist + hip - neck) + 0.22100 × log10(height)) - 450

This US Navy body fat formula is one of the most widely used methods for estimating body composition without specialized equipment. All measurements must be entered in centimeters (cm). Using inches or mixed units will produce incorrect results.

Note: This is an estimation formula. For medical accuracy, DEXA scans are required.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Healthy body fat ranges depend on gender, age and activity level.

Athletes typically have lower body fat, while average healthy ranges vary between 10–25% for men and 18–30% for women.
